Abstract

This study analyses the impact of the transportation sector on economic growth in Turkey, using macroeconomic indicators for the period 2000–2024. In the analysis, container port traffic (TEU), rail freight (million ton-km), and air freight (million ton-km) variables were used to represent maritime transport. In contrast, the real GDP growth rate was used to represent economic growth. The data used in the research were obtained from the World Bank database. The stationarity of the variables was tested using the Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) unit root test. The ARDL bounds test approach, which allows for the analysis of series with different degrees of integration, was used. The findings revealed a long-term cointegration relationship between transportation indicators and economic growth. Furthermore, according to the long-term estimation results, container port traffic positively and statistically significantly affects economic growth, whereas rail freight exhibits a negative and significant long-term relationship. The effect of air freight on economic growth was found to be statistically insignificant. Short-term dynamics also show that port transportation plays a supportive role in economic growth. The analysis indicates that maritime infrastructure, in particular, is of strategic importance for economic growth.
