Abstract

Despite the remarkable progress in research on the effects of gossip, which is also common in organizations, on employees, there is not enough literature on how negative workplace gossip affects work-related behaviours. In this research, which was conducted to close this gap in the literature, a conceptual model including negative workplace gossip, organizational citizenship behaviour, turnover intention and employee performance was proposed. Survey data were obtained from industry and service sector employees in Bursa to test the proposed model. (n=418). The obtained data were analysed via SPSS and AMOS programs. The analysis results indicate that negative workplace gossip reduces organizational citizenship behaviour and increases turnover intention. The findings also indicate that decreased organizational citizenship behaviour and increased turnover intention negatively affect employee performance. Findings not only enrich the literature on negative workplace gossip and also provide insights into practitioners.
